Hangout Music Festival – The Name Really Says It All, Time to Head to the Gulf Shores of Alabama!

Join the Hangout Festival this May for three days of fun, sun, and great music! Alabama is the place to be this spring to hear all your favorite bands.

Where’s the Hangout?

Hangout happens during a weekend in May on Alabama’s beaches.

Every year Hangout happens during a weekend in May on  Alabama’s beaches that are located on the sandy Gulf Shores of the state. Listening to the crashing waves of the ocean and the rockin’ sounds of live music—there’s truly no better way to hear your favorite artists.

Hangout began as the brainchild of founders Shaul Zislin and A.J. Niland. The festival was created as a way to bring together artists and fans of all music genres for one incredible beach party. Fans will find headliners like Tom Petty & The Heart Breakers, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters, Bassnectar, as well as many more playing the main stages throughout the weekend.

How Hangout Began
The first Hangout festival was held in 2009 as the simple yet novel idea of having a beach festival with popular artists. Unfortunately, right before the festival’s debut, the Golf Coast oil spill took place, dramatically affecting the attendance of the first Hangout. In the following year, attendance jumped to a number of 35,000 attendees, each day.

Each year ticket sales for Hangout have steadily increased to being sold out at 40,000 ticket sales. Theses days, Early Bird tickets to the festival sell out within hours and General Admission tickets tend to sell out months before the actual show.

As the community of the Gulf Shores area began to take notice of the near $30 million that Hangout was generating for it’s economy, this festival has become a staple in Alabama and in seven years since it’s induction, Hangout has rapidly climbed to being one of the country’s best-loved destinations.

How Much is Hangout?
Buy your tickets as soon as you know you want to go to Hangout! Tickets sell out incredibly quickly, so it’s best to think about attending at the end of the previous year. General Admission tickets cover all three days and start at $249. VIP three day passes are $1099 and Super VIP passes for all three days are $1599. If the festival is sold out, try looking to see if people are selling tickets a few weeks before the festival.

Festival Fashion: Should You Let it All Hang Out?
When it comes to dressing for a music festival, comfortable is always the way to go! When dressing for Hangout, however, carefully consider the beachy location and pack your typical ocean attire. Bring on the bikinis and bathing suits! You’re going to be sitting on the sand and splashing in the waves for three days so make sure you’re ready to bare some skin.

When it comes to the sun, pack head gear that will keep you as shady as possible. Bring a few pairs of sunglasses, sun hats, baseball caps, visors, and headbands to keep the sweat off your face and sun out of your eyes. In addition to dressing for the heat, keep in mind to drink for it as well! (Stay hydrated!)

Your daily footwear at Hangout will almost always be flip flops or simple sandals. You’re feet are going to be wet, sandy, or hot so it’s best to take the easiest shoe that you can just slip on or slip off within seconds. Crocs work well if you want to dress your beachy feet up a bit.

Bring some extra layers as well in case you need to head to the store or you just feel like changing. If you’re staying at hangout from dusk ‘til dawn, I would recommend that you bring a change of clothes for bars and clubs you may be heading to in the evening.

What to Bring to the Festival

Preparing for hangout means: beach prep and music festival prep!

Hangout Festival is really unique because of its location on the actual shores of the beach. This amazing atmosphere makes preparing for this festival a little different than getting ready for others. On one hand, you will have to pack everything you need for a music festival and then you have to pack what you need for an extended stay at the beach!

Typical music festival preparation includes planning out your entire schedule before you get to the actual festival. Visit the Hangout website and download the app so you are prepared to locate when and where all your favorite bands are playing. Look at the map and plot out paths for you to go through the day to see everything so you don’t waste unnecessary time trying to sift through all the artists the day of the event.

In addition to bringing a schedule you will want to bring towels, bug repellant, sunblock, breath mints, band aids and other first aid equipment. Additionally you will want to bring over the counter medicine in case of a headache or emergency, vitamins, non perishable snacks, deodorant and anything else you can think of.

Safety at the Festival
Festival safely is very important and taking a few steps to think about it now will help you when you arrive at Hangout. Take a second to write out all your important phone numbers so you can have an on hand copy in the event that your phone gets damaged, lost, or stolen. Have a secondary way to contact friends—pick a meeting place and times each day for everyone to meet up and check on each other. Many former attendees suggest getting Walkie Talkies instead of phones and having large flags or totems so friends recognize each other in a crowd.

Throughout the festival, everyone in your group should have a Hangout buddy so at least one person knows where the other is at all times. If you are not comfortable around large bodies of water, stay on the shore or bring floatation devices with you. Perhaps brush up on your swimming lessons before arriving.

Carrying Cash at the Festival
After discussing safety at Hangout, it makes sense for you to be conscious of how much cash you carry on your person. If you can avoid carrying a lot of cash with you during the festival, it will prevent it from getting lost or stolen. However, you should know that most items within the festival only accept cash and the beach has very few ATMS. If you would rather not wait in line, have a lot of cash stashed away somewhere—perhaps a safe place in your car.

Hydrating at Hangout
Before you get to Hangout, you need to make a plan to stay hydrated! Spending hours a day in direct sunlight is incredibly taxing on your body and your health so you need to make sure you are consuming as much water as the sun is draining from you.

Keep several packs of water bottles, Gatorade, and/or Powerade in your car, and suitcase so that you can restock your backpack when you get low. Keep an empty drinking container on you at all times just so you have the opportunity to refill it if you are not near your belongings. Having Pedialyte on hand is also helpful to mix in with water to keep you from dehydrating.

Where to Stay During Hangout
When it comes to lodging locations during Hangout, you may want to check the festival website to see what packages they offer with their Condo partners. The featured hotels are Phoenix West, Phoenix West II, Phoenix III, Phoenix IV, Phoenix V, The Enclave, Caribe B813, Shoalwater, Springers Sandcastle, Palm Beach 31 B, Seachase, The Palms, Tourqouise Place Travel Package, and White Caps.

If you are still looking for a place to stay during Hangout, check Air BnB to see if you can find cheaper accommodations in the area. Many people have vacation homes around the Gulf Shores that might have empty rooms for festival goers. Several of the available places to lodge are accessible by bike from the beaches or offer special shuttles to and from the festival.

Festival Travel
Having a festival like Hangout means there’s going to be a lot of walking! Many bring or rent bikes as well to help get around during the day. When it comes to commuting between condos and local places, Hangout offers its own line of shuttles.

Take a visit to the Hangout website to look over the shuttle map so you can plan further. You can purchase the Anytime Anyline Shuttle Pass in advance so you have an express pass that lets you ride any shuttle at anytime. In the event that these sell out, you can still purchase specific passes for any kind of shuttle that you need. The Hangout shuttles are color coded on the map and are the East Line, the West line, the Beach Club or North Line, and the State Park Line.

So start packing your bags and get ready to meet me at the beach for the next Hangout!
